As house and extension prices start to creep back up again, most of us are sitting patiently on our properties until we feel we are able to get the best value for money out of them. For some families, it’s a simple case of paying off the existing mortgage and biding ones time. However, a lot of growing families have been put in a tricky situation where they are forced to choose one of two options for their family: to sell up or to have a home extension. Because of the current status of the property market, a lot of young families are choosing to stay put. In response to this, the government has relaxed to laws on obtaining planning permission for internal work such as loft conversions and even to a certain extent on house extensions.
Did you know Britain builds the smallest homes in Europe?
Many people think this is because of a lack of suitable land to build on in the UK. However, we’re just as densely populated as countries like Italy and The Netherlands, both of which build bigger houses than we do. Even Japan builds larger houses, so what’s the real reason? Well, it’s hard to say. One could speculate that the reason we tend to build and live in smaller houses is because we are an island and as such can expect island weather conditions (storms, wind and extreme weather). One could also speculate that this statistic has a lot to do with the vast amounts of terraced buildings that were built from the 17th century onward. Regardless of the reason, it doesn’t stop UK homeowners craving more space.
In many areas in the UK, house extensions now make up the majority of projects commencing.
The house extensions we have undertaken in Manchester have been on terraced, semi-detached and detached houses. In built up areas such as Manchester and Stockport, house and home extensions are becoming increasingly popular, and act as a good model for what is happening elsewhere in the UK.
