When Mr and Mrs Gooderson first approached us, they had a clear vision: a generous single-storey extension that would reach out into the garden, offering additional seating and storage, separate from the kitchen. But with planning restrictions in place due to the period nature of their home, the original design wasn’t approved.
Rather than lose sight of their goals, we worked closely with them to create a revised scheme that embraced the constraints while still delivering meaningful transformation. The result is a compact yet impactful extension that enhances their lifestyle without compromising the home’s character.
Stonework was selected to closely match the existing façade, ensuring the new addition felt like a natural continuation rather than an obvious modern bolt-on. Traditional materials were combined with contemporary construction techniques, including modern insulation and efficient detailing, for comfort and performance. A central atrium-style rooflight punctuates the flat roof, allowing natural light to pour into the newly extended kitchen.
Inside, we completely reconfigured the layout to improve flow and function. Intelligent storage was built in at every turn, with hidden solutions such as corner LeMans units, pull-out larders and deep drawers. The space is not only brighter and more open, but dramatically more usable.
A Seamless and Stylish Addition
While the original plan called for a larger footprint, this revised design proved that great results don’t always require more square footage. The new extension has introduced a sense of space, light, and order, turning what was once a cramped kitchen into a welcoming social hub at the heart of the home.
Carefully chosen materials, timeless finishes, and a respectful architectural approach have made this addition feel both fresh and in keeping with the original building. The Goodersons now have a beautiful, functional space that’s ready for everyday life and one that honours the heritage of their much-loved cottage.
