Like many other homeowners, Ms Wells found that her conservatory was impractical and unused day to day – too cold in winter, too hot in summer – it was disconnected from the main home and not suitable for use. Ms Wells chose Adamsons to help her to transform the space, removing the old conservatory and building a new, single storey rear extension in its place. From this, the kitchen is now brighter, has much improved flow and a dedicated dining area that is usable all year round.
Letting Light In
Internally, the ceiling was vaulted to follow the roofline, giving the new kitchen and dining area a sense of height and openness. Two solar Velux roof windows were installed to draw light into the centre of the room, while wide sliding patio doors open directly onto the garden.
The difference in feel is dramatic. What was once an awkward, rarely used space is now the brightest and most welcoming part of the home.
A structural opening was formed between the original kitchen and the new extension, allowing the entire area to flow as one. Rather than feeling like “kitchen plus extra room”, it now feels like a single, well-balanced space designed around how the homeowner actually lives.
Keeping The Kitchen, Elevating The Space
Ms Wells chose to retain their existing kitchen cabinetry but update key elements so it felt at home within the new extension. New Black Granite laminate worktops were installed, instantly giving the kitchen a stronger, more contemporary look. The hob was carefully removed and refitted, dresser units were taken out and reinstated, and a new Blanco Lemis sink and Max11 tap were added to refresh the working area.
Amtico Spacia flooring in Honey Oak now runs throughout both the original kitchen and the extension, tying everything together. That continuity is subtle, but it plays a big role in making the finished result feel cohesive and considered.
Designed For Everyday Life
Because this extension would become the heart of the home, comfort was key. Underfloor heating was installed beneath the new tiled floor, ensuring the dining area is warm and usable throughout the year, something the old conservatory could never offer.
Lighting was also carefully planned. Recessed LED downlights were fitted in both the existing kitchen and the new extension, creating a consistent, welcoming atmosphere from one end of the space to the other. The result is a kitchen with a dining space that genuinely supports day to day life, somewhere to sit and work, relaxed breakfasts, busy weekday dinners and weekend gatherings.
A Well-Managed Transformation
Replacing a conservatory with a permanent extension is a significant investment, and managing the process carefully is just as important as the build itself.
From demolition through to final finishes, the works were coordinated by our team. Protective measures were put in place across the home, scaffolding erected safely, and the site kept organised throughout. The project was delivered on a fixed price agreed from the outset, providing clarity and reassurance at every stage.
