The Ultimate Guide to: Pantries

You’ve likely seen those satisfying pantry organisation videos on social media by now.

Homeowners across the world are meticulously organising their dry cupboard goods in neat glass jars, plastic tubs and handy drawers. It is no wonder so many of us are now keen to create perfectly organised solutions in our own kitchens.

But where did it all begin?

History of the Pantry

Historically in the UK, pantries were a necessity to keep fresh food products such as meat and dairy from spoiling too soon. In medieval and up to the Victorian times, pantries and sculleries would be the place for servants to prepare meals.

Then, the world wars saw pantries come into their own, becoming a necessity for storing all manner of canned goods. In the post war swinging 60’s pantries were quickly replaced by ultra-modern kitchens with bold, daring colours and extensive cabinetry. That, paired with new, improved refrigeration solutions led to the pantry becoming nearly obsolete.

Until recently, when the late 90’s saw pantries make a comeback, particularly in American homes and soon enough, us Brits adopted them into our kitchens too. Which brings us to…

The Modern Pantry

They’re one of the most highly sought after features of many modern kitchens. In keeping our food essentials neatly organised, easily accessible and looking pretty, a pantry gives us that extra special touch to one of the most used rooms in our homes.

Whether it’s a luxurious walk-in moment or a compact pull out larder, homeowners across the UK are finding new, innovative ways to adopt this latest kitchen trend for their homes.

How to Organise your Pantry

Thanks to the Mrs Hinches and Marie Kondos of the world, the desire for carefully organised yet simplified storage has skyrocketed in recent years.

How do you make sure your pantry isn’t just beautiful, but functional too?

Here are few essential tips we’ve come across in our research:

  • Invest in airtight, stackable containers for dry goods. They’ll keep your ingredients fresh for even longer and reduce the cupboard space needed to have them on hand when they’re needed.
  • Group items together logically. Chances are, if you’re baking a cake, you’ll need to grab a few things from your pantry to get started. By keeping them close together, it prevents the need to hunt through all your jars and tubs to find what you need.
  • Use labels wisely. Adding a label with the food product and date opened is essential to keeping on top of your stock. We’ve all discovered a rogue spice from an embarrassingly long time ago at the back of our cabinet.

Clear, easy to read labels keep you aware of what you have, what you might need more of the next time you do your shop and what might be best going into the bin.

So, how do you create your dream pantry?

Here are our essential design tips:

Make it Versatile

On average, homeowners will renovate their kitchens once every 15-20 years, a lot can change in that time!

What once was oodles of storage for jars of baby food soon becomes filled with decor bits, ready for entertaining friends. While it’s tempting to plan for the here and now, we advise customers to consider their long-term requirements and consider how their kitchen may need to change over time.

Consider your Lighting Options

Unfortunately, especially here in the UK, most pantries are not flooded with natural light. You don’t want to be rummaging around in the dark when looking for a quick ingredient to add to a recipe.

Consider subtle strip lighting along shelves and under cupboards, automatic lights within cabinets and of course, an all-important main light source for the room.

Pantry vs Kitchen

Is the pantry a place for excess bulk-bought food items?

Or is it where you’ll store your counter-top appliances when you don’t need them? Or maybe a place to keep those bulkier items that you use infrequently throughout the year? Or even all the above.

Chances are if you are looking at building a pantry, you’re reviewing your kitchen too, so consider how they will work together to give you the solution you need.

For food storage, you may need to prioritise shelving solutions, for appliances, it could be counter-tops or large, deep cabinetry.

Think about the problems you’re having with your existing space and how a pantry might be able to resolve them.

The Wow Factor

If you are wanting to make your space truly impressive, the hidden pantry is the way to go. In addition to providing an organised, tidy space for clutter, it will blend seamlessly with your kitchen so your guests would never even know it is there…until you give them the grand reveal.

Both practical and impressive, a hidden pantry is becoming an attractive option for homeowners across the country.

Make it Beautiful

While pantries are first and foremost a practical solution to an age-old problem – a lack of storage – they’re pipped as one of the recent trends that will only continue to grow in the coming years. So why not make them beautiful too?

Gone are the days of chucking things into a cupboard and calling that the pantry. Now, pantries have their own focus.

Everything from deep drawer storage for those cumbersome pots and pans to large, open shelves for those lesser used items like picnic baskets and seasonal decor; it can all be made beautiful with endless cabinetry, hardware and shelving combinations that work for you.
