When Mrs Massey came to us, her goal was to create a more practical layout on the ground floor, one that would link the kitchen, utility and WC in a way that felt effortless. To make this possible, we built a modest single-storey side house extension designed to blend sympathetically with the existing home.
The extension was constructed using cavity walling and brickwork matched to the original property, supported on trench-filled concrete foundations for long-term stability. A dual-pitched tiled roof, carefully selected to complement the existing roofline, added height and light to the internal spaces. We installed high-performance insulation within both the walls and roof to ensure year-round comfort.
Internally, the extension provided valuable square footage that allowed us to reconfigure the kitchen and utility areas. A small step transition now leads from the kitchen into the utility room via a new structural opening, making the layout far more user-friendly. The floor throughout the new space was upgraded with Amtico Sash Oak flooring that now runs seamlessly throughout the kitchen, utility, and WC.
As part of the works, we added two A-rated, double-glazed rosewood windows—one in the new WC and one in the utility room—featuring gold cranked handles and warm-edge spacers to ensure high energy performance.
The side extension not only created space for a beautiful new kitchen but also allowed for the creation of a sleek downstairs WC and reconfigured utility room, all of which now work together as a cohesive, efficient living space.
